At a glance
Compare what each proposal replaces, what remains and who handles restoration. A lower price may reflect a different scope rather than an equivalent project.
Compare the same system
Make sure each proposal identifies water supply lines, drains or both. A supply repipe does not automatically replace sewer piping or every fixture. For partial replacement, ask which existing sections remain and where the new work connects. Clear boundaries make estimates easier to compare.
Ask about access and restoration
Discuss how pipes will be routed and which surfaces may need to be opened. Find out who repairs walls or finishes afterward. Ask how the plan accounts for occupied rooms and stored belongings. Two prices may represent very different amounts of restoration work.
Plan interruptions and approvals
Ask when water will be unavailable and what access is required during each stage. In a condo, coordinate with management before work affecting shared systems. Discuss permit responsibilities for the specific project and address. A seasonal owner should also identify a local contact and an approval process.
Keep the decision grounded in findings
Ask how the proposed work addresses the observed problems and repair history. A construction year alone is not a complete picture of a home's current piping. Keep inspection findings, the agreed scope and completion documents together so later maintenance decisions have a reliable starting point.
Ask what remains after a partial repipe
A partial replacement should identify where new piping connects to the existing system and which sections remain unchanged. Ask how that scope addresses the observed failure history. If proposals differ, ask each contractor to explain the difference rather than comparing totals alone. Keep a written record of exclusions so future work is not mistaken for an unfinished part of the current project.
Define the handoff between trades
Plumbing access may involve surfaces that need separate restoration. Ask who makes openings, who repairs them and whether those tasks are included in the price. Clarify how work will be coordinated in occupied rooms and who communicates changes. For a condo or seasonal property, settle access and approval responsibilities before scheduling. At completion, ask for an explanation of the work performed and the relevant project records.
